Hey Irish John
Threre's probably as many ways of doing what you want as there are subscribers to this forum. My music is folksy 50s rock and here is my take as someone who does what you are doing recording-wise only for a different type of music.
First I record a guide (sometimes called a click track or pre-track) typically including (bad) lead vocal, rhythm and drum each on a different track in my R16. I use a drum pattern from a keyboard plugged directly into the Zoom R16, you might have a drum machine or at least a metronome. This lays out the arrangement: i.e.: Verse 1, chorus, Verse 2, chorus, bridge, Verse 3, Chorus, outro. With this in place I can then add other instruments: bass, keys, lead guitar plus as many additional vocal/harmony tracks.
For a final take, I might re-record the lead vocal singing only for a better 'performance' and the same with re-recording the rhythm track especially if I want to add pedal effects or fancy strums that I can't do while singing and playing. So, from the original "pre-tracks", the only one I keep is the drum which probably is why it's called the click track.
Hope this is helpful!
