Hi folks,

I've just taken apart my Zoom H2n with a view to doing some modifications. I thought people might be interested to see what's inside...

It's nice and clean inside (and easy to take apart) with more space around the mic array than the H2. Also interesting that the side "pair" is a single capsule.

Cheers,
Daniel

The Question (to which everyone with an H2n wants an answer):

Have you identified the mysterious shiny wire seen on one edge of the mesh screen?

Single capsule S element... so either they used a real figure-8 element, or somehow hid a pair of back-to-back cardioids inside one shell.

Pretty sure that wire carries the signal from the mic selection switch on top.

Thing is, it looks like an unshielded metal staple just under the edge of the mesh... Too short to run from top to bottom.

And, based on the photos, the switch wires are orange/yellow and green, AND there is about a quarter inch of support frame on both sides; the wires are way inside relative to the mystery...

Wow. You could knock me down with a feather re the side mic. Looks like they described it as two mics in order not to confuse the customers, but there's every indication it's a real figure of 8.

Note also how the XY pair is mounted one above the other for correct phase alignment.

They've really made a textbook job of the mic capsule arrangement.

Thanks for the pics!

The shiny metal is part of a metal strap running to both grilles, that I assume provides some measure of shielding. Its contact point on the other grille (on the back side that I removed) is hidden by the plastic plate with the zoom logo.

I'm glad I found these pictures. Since the H2n came out, I wanted to adjust my Zoom2Five plug-in for the H2n, but I wasn't sure about the caps arrangement.

If somebody could record me a walk around the H2n while calling out directions, it would be very useful (setting "4ch surround" with "MS Raw").

TIA!

I contacted tech support and they told me that two mic capsules are contained in a single housing to create the simulated bidirectional mic.

hmmm. It's hard to see how, looking at the photo. It's a pity we don't have more detail from other angles.

Well, the main thing is that it works, never mind how!
