Hey guys so I got my zoom R8 for Christmas, and I'm a total newb at recording/producing anything. Being a full-time honours student, I've honestly not had much time to play around/master this thing at all. With that being said, here's my first decent beat I've made. Please let me know what you think! I already know I'm gonna need some more variation for the samples, as well as mix the drums a bit better, but yeah. Everything was made on my R8 :)

Hey, hey! ;)

Are the drums from the sample, or off the R8? They don't sound bad; you might want to look at some of the mastering effects, try and brighten them up.

Not much to this. I'll be interested in hearing what you get when you lay vox down as such.

Have fun!

Thanks!

Matty

The snare and bass are both just mono samples that I downloaded in a pack. I mapped them onto the track buttons and played them live to create a loop that I mixmastered (is that the right term, like I said NEWB here), then assigned it to another track, and then in that one little break down I'm just playing the pads live over the key sample repeated. How would I go about mastering them better? thanks in advance!

"hé hé" is the french version.
Do you want me to sing it?

More seriously you should ask on the zoom R16 & R24 section. That's what R8 owners do.

Oui. Ask there, and take a peek at the manual. Not that I ever do. ;)

For Hip-Hop, Hey Hey or (ou) Hé Hé is great in French or English.
I think this is very decent, you can build on that beat and riff.
Drums are too dry for my own taste (except the bass drum), but I like the piano to be dry.
Good vamp!

Nice groove and hook but you need some variation.

Cheers

I agree with the previous posts Matty. A very good start. Now break out that vocal mic. :)

Being a newbie to audio production, I’d say this is a pretty good start. I have the zoom r16 which doesn’t have the drum/sampling capability? Just curious, does the unit have any type of quanitize function? I’d like to hear the drums hit a little more on time. This is just my opinion as other producers do a great job of making the off-beat humanized production style work great for them for example Hudson Mohawke/Flying Lotus. I love them both because they don’t follow the rules. So, keep at it because like I said, this is a great start. I’d like to hear the drums a little louder too. I’ve never heard the song you mentioned getting the sample from, so I can’t comment there other than saying I liked it in there. Look forward to hearing you grow. I actually requested that a friend of mine get this product. He ended up getting the R16 and It was stolen from his mom's car before he even learned to use it well.

Gets tiring, but you freely admit it was an exercise in programming beats into your new machine.

Sounds like you're on your way.

Hmm...the initial motif was neat but...I suppose it could use a little change up.
