Our forums have moved to Zoom! (well, duh, if you're here, you already know that!)

Why the change? Listen to our Editorial at the end of IHR #84 for an explanation. (The quick version: spammers!) These pages will remain as an archive of our discussions from 2006 to 2010. Thanks to everyone who participated during that time. Remember to visit the IHR home page and blog, where you can leave comments and subscribe to the Inside Home Recording podcast.

Ah... now for unpacking the dishes...

Good move! Not that I've posted a whole lot lately or that anyone really cares, But I'm DaveDudek on the old IHR forums.

Just an update on my music/recording status:

After futzing around with PC's running Windblows and/or Ubuntu Studio Linux, a Roland/Boss BR1200 CD, and an ancient suped-up PowerMac G4 tower, I finally got new gear that actually works really well for me. I was pretty much inspired to choose what I did from listening to the IHR and Home Made Hit Show podcasts. I now use:

I've been doing quite a bit of recording with the H4n both as a standalone recorder as well as a USB interface for my MacBook Pro. GarageBand 3 (iLife '08) suits most of my editing needs, although I've used Reaper the few occasions I need something more sophisticated.

My ultimate goal is to record some original songs that I can share on the Home Made Hit Show podcast. I've been recording some of my band's original songs, but mostly I've been recording other bands, artists at a local open mic I frequent, and street musicians. I've also done some interesting field recording of environments just for fun. My RedHead windscreen is indispensible for these as well as recording outdoor concerts and such.

Welcome to IHR and all it's posters! (It's obvious that Zoetrope must be well connected since he can avoid spam overflow...)

guitarot - I'm a bit surprised to see you use an H4n as your audio interface. I bought one a year ago and never got it to work properly in that scenario. It would sometimes work well for a little while, and then without warning (i.e. when trying to record next track) it just gives ridiculous latency, like 500ms or more. Maybe it works better with Mac than with PC. Anyway, I just bought a Line6 UX2 instead, hoping it will work better.

I've been listening to the show for a while and learning lots. Not done a huge amount of recording, but I did a song for a collaborative album by the Six String Bliss guitar community. I used Ardour and a few other apps on Ubuntu Linux. I used a Zoom H4 as my microphone/interface and it worked fine. I don't have much other gear anyway.

I've been very impressed by Derek's attitude to his cancer. You are an inspiration.
