Here is my second effort. It's a Stones number off Sticky Fingers called Sway, a favourite of mine because Keith finally allowed Mick Taylor off the leash to spin some blues magic.

You'll find it at: http://www.thompsontech.com/recordings.htm

I tried for a jangly/bluesy combination as well as my first attempt at bouncing. Recorded rhythm, vocal, backup vocal on 1 2 and 3 then bounced them together onto track 3 take 2. Recorded two lead guitars on 1 and 2 with left and right pannings of 5 points. All feedback welcome.

Hi Thommo, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. The guitar work and production values seem right on. One personal point, the vocals seem too far in the background to my ear, although that may have been your intention, choosing instead to highlight the guitar work.

Jeff

Thanks for the feedback. I think you're spot on about the vocals so I've taken another stab at them and remixed. I appreciate the advice.

Cheers, Thommo

You and Andy are obviously doing nothing but play guitar over there. I loved the guitar work at the end of the tune, reminded me more of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour than the Stones, there was a cool darkness to it. I agree with Jeffster that the vocals could be mixed louder. Some compression on the vocals and less reverb would help too. I'd use very little reverb on the guitars, or record them totally dry, some of your guitar work is getting lost in the wash of reverb. Better to add this on the computer; with a good reverb on the PC you can set a pre-delay so the reverb doesn't kick in till a little after the attack. If none of that made any sense it's because I haven't hit the coffee yet this morning.

For a second attempt it's already sounding great. Looking forward to your 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. :D

Thanks Zoetrope. I used to own a Fostex VF-08 but sold it and bought two PS-02's, one for me and one for Andy. Andy's in shred mode at the moment and totally into Van Halen, Vai and Satriani. I think he could knock out a decent tune for the Zoomilation CD. He's on school holidays now (we're in Sydney Australia) so expect some more from him soon.

Thanks for the advice on the reverb wash, will try your suggestions.

regards
Thommo

Thommo … Good song. I agree with both Jeffster and Zoetrope. I think the majority of us that have songs with vocals tend to put them too far back in mix. I’ve had that problem too but good song and I too liked the guitars at end … nice. Any chance of you and Andy doing one together?
