I will be playing an acoustic duo gig tomorrow night (fri june25th) and using my H2 for the first time. I am sure this has been asked and answered, but which if any of the comp setting would you use. We have an acoustic guitar plugged in the board, electric bass with small amp with DI into board and two vocals..we have monitors.

So use the mikes built in or go direct from board?

Bought an 8g card but which rec setting really works fine and what is overkill?

thanks in advance

When I record my live shows I use a board feed rather than mic the speakers. The room sound is usually pretty marginal, with lots of (people) noise as well. My stuff is all solo guitar, so the mix is not an issue. For you, the mix might be a problem.

And using the H2 with most mixer line out or tape out connections leads to clipping. I use an attenuator between the mixer tape out jacks and the H2. Another option, possibly, is to use the headphone outs on the mixer, since that output has a level control and can be turned down.

As far as recording format, I would always use PCM 44.1 and on the Zoom H2, 16 bit, since the noise floor is higher than the 16 bit quantization noise, which means 24 bit is just wasted space.

thanks Fran

the board we use does have record (tape) output, I guess I need to find out if that is too much signal for the H2

Have you found audio attenuators anywhere that have either RCA or 1/4" plugs? I have a pair of 18 dB XLR pads that I sometimes use on external mics for really loud bands, but I haven't found any for RCA or 1/4", so I've been thinking of making some, but buying is easier. ;-)

Hi.

This site http://www.rothwellaudioproducts.co.uk/html/hi-fi.html is where I bought mine. Andrew Rothwell is able to build these "to order"; I wanted a pair of in-line RCA attenuators whose signal flow was the reverse of the normal, in through the pin out through the socket. He was happy to make these specially at, I'm fairly sure, exactly the same price as the "standard" version.

HTH.

Jeff

I use this one: http://www.electronicplus.com/prodSearc ... mit=Search

which looks like this:

I usually set it at 50% when I connect to mixer tape outs.

thanks for the tip to knock down the tape out signal from the board, I did try and just use the tapes out of the board into the H2 for our electric full band show , but it did overload and has horrible clipping, I thought by using the input level control I would be able to get a good usable signal, but it seems that won't be enough attenuation.

My first live recording(of our acoustic duo) was done using built in mikes and was quite pleased with the results..here's what we got

would have recorded more but left the unit in pause for our second set

There are two input level controls on the H2 - the "Mic Gain" switch on the side and the and the "Rec Level" on the front. Only the Mic Gain switch affects analog level, the Rec Level is a digital control, post a/d. Standard line level out from all the mixers I've tried has clobbered the analog preamp and a/d, the Rec Level can only adjust how loud the horrible clipping is recorded. There's lots of good info on the subtleties of the H2 in this thread: http://www.2090.org/zoom/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=9745

Sounds darned good to me. I might have tweaked things in post to get the levels up a bit, but the sound is nice and clear.

I'm intimately familiar with failing to hit the record button the second time. In fact, after doing this for several years I've made all the stupid mistakes at least once and now I'm working on making all of them in new and different combinations. If you want to increase the glitch factor substantially, try adding video to your bag <grin>.
